Biography of George S. Lindsay (1827-188?)
By Ken Lindsay
George S. LINDSAY (Cyrus6;
John C.5; Anthony Jr.4; Anthony Sr.3;
Samuel2; Robert1), son
of Cyrus LINDSAY and
Mary JACKSON, was born 19 August 1827 in
Dearborn Co., Indiana, and died __ ___ 188? in _______ Co., Kentucky. He is
believed to have been buried in the old Dukes Cemetery, located near
Cloverport, Breckenridge Co., Kentucky.
Birth: Taken from the Hancock Co., Kentucky Vital
Records of the year 1851. These are on microfilm and were observed at the
Owensboro, Daviess Co., Kentucky, Public Library. (Death record for son,
Benjamin L. Lindsay, son of George S. and Nancy (Lynch) Lindsay, who died
25 Sep 1851 at the age of two years. Document gives father's date of birth
and place of birth.)

His father and mother, Cyrus and Mary (Jackson) Lindsay, brought the
family to Hancock Co., Kentucky, from Perry Co., Indiana, in 1833. This is
the first year, his father's name appeared on the Hancock County tax rolls.
George Lindsay's mother died when he was twelve years old. His father
soon remarried Mrs. Elizabeth Patterson. She had a family, too, beside being
pregnant with child by his father, Cyrus; however, the two families did not
mesh well and George's father and all children, by his first wife, abandoned
the stepmother. The father placed the most of his children in the homes of
relatives and friends and joined his cousin, Greenberry Lindsay in
Grayville, White Co., Illinois.
Evidently, the mother, Mary (Jackson) Lindsay died
sometime in 1840 as Cyrus Lindsay married a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth
Patterson, at Hancock Co., Kentucky, 28 Jan 1841. W. A. Davison, J.P.,
performed the ceremony. The record shows that both had been married
before. (Hancock Co., Kentucky, Marriage Bonds p 24.)
Hancock Co., Kentucky Deed Book 2, pp 546-547, dated 3
Sep 1841, shows Cyrus Lindsay was indebted to N. V. Bond, Board Wilson,
and J. Harrison to be paid by 1 Dec 1841. (I wonder if this is concerned
some way or other with his wife's death. Perhaps doctor and funeral
expenses.)
E. Lindsay 1844 Apr 28th sworn to before me in the
usual form.
vs. J. E. Stone, clk.
C. Lindsay
To the honorable the Judge of the Hancock Co., Ky Circuit Court in
Chancery sitting.
Humbly Complaining your executrix Elizabeth Lindsay will respectfully
represent unto your honor that on the 28th day of Jan. 1841 She was
married to one Cyrus Lindsay in Hancock County, Kentucky - with whom she
continued to live until some time in the fall of the year 1841 when said
Lindsay left her with the intention of abandoning her entirely and has
been absent and a non resident of the State of Kentucky ever since leaving
her without any possessions or support and she is informed and charges
that he has again contracted marriage in the State of Illinois.
She states that they were married in Hancock Co., Ky where she now resides
- He has no property in this state she therefore asks no decree for
alimony - She prays that she may be divorced from him and unloosed to all
the rights and privileges of an unmarried woman by the proper decree of
this court.
Williams P
This divorce was granted; however, she was mistaken about Cyrus having
"Contracted" marriage in the State of Illinois. He had not, but did marry
after the divorce was granted. KGL

Second Marriage: Hancock Co., Kentucky, Marriage
Bonds, p 92. (Groom of age. Mother of the bride gave her consent.)
According to Glenn Hodges in his "FEARFUL TIMES",
published by The Hancock Co., Kentucky Historical Society and the Hancock
"Clarion," which was published at Hawesville, Kentucky in 1986, Hardin A.
Davison was a man of many hats. Not only was he a cabinet maker, he was a
politician and a physician. Before the Civil War broke out he was very
favorable to the Union. His son, was an officer in the Union Army;
however, he later changed sides and fought on the side of the
Confederates.
Dr. Hardin Aurelius Davison shot merchant Thomas St. Clair Lowe to death
in the Hawesville Jail Cell on 2 March 1859, after Lowe had been arrested
for participating in a widely publicized gunfight with District Prosecutor
Cicero Maxwell in the streets of Hawesville.
On 6 February 1860, in another act of revenge, the doctor bombed the
Duncan General Store in Hawesville, trying to kill an old enemy, William
Sterett, who was a customer. Davison failed and died later from burns and
injuries he sustained in the bombing. Thus, ended the life of one of
George S. Lindsay's best friends.
The Tax lists of 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, and 1869 shows George S.
Lindsay was enrolled in the Militia. (Hancock Co., Kentucky Tax Lists). As
we all know, Kentucky was neutral during the Civil War.
They had five children (all born in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky):

LINDSAY, b. 6 Dec 1857; d. 8 Dec 1938 in Patoka Twp., Pike Co.,

Co., Kentucky, nor is he listed on any tax lists after 1869. It is only
my assumption the George and Mahalia died in 1869 or early 1870)
Through documents provided by Glenda Callahan of
Chatham, Illinois, Thomas Lindsay who appears in the 1880 Federal Census
of the Cloverport District, Hancock Co., Kentucky, was listed as a 16
year-old boarder on farm in the household of John H. McGavock. Other
documents show that on 1 June 1882, his father, George Lindsay signed a
note granting permission that his son, Thomas Lindsay, be issued a
license to marry. (22 July 2005)
