Biography of Elizabeth Wilson (1830-1895)

By Ken Lindsay

Elizabeth WILSON, daughter of Thomas WILSON and Elizabeth _______, was born 6 October 1830 probably in Durham or Northumberland, England, and died 19 November 1895 in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky. She is buried beside her husband in the Hawesville Cemetery.

Elizabeth Wilson, was brought to the United States by her parents sometime in 1840-1841 arriving in New Jersey. Her father was a mining engineer and was sent to the country by a group of English investors. His goal was to explore for coal in America which led the family to Kentucky.

Elizabeth WILSON married about 1850, Edward E. BERKLEY, son of _______ BERKLEY and _______ _______, probably in New Jersey. Shortly thereafter, the Berkley and Wilson families relocated to Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky.

Obviously, Elizabeth Wilson had more tragedy in her life than most people. Her husband was killed in the coal mines, leaving her with six children ranging in age of between the ages of  4 to 12. Times were tough and it wasn't long that tragedy struck again when a roof fall at the same mine took the life of her son, Benjamin.

SOURCES:
BIRTH - Hawesville Cemetery Tombstone, Hawesville, Kentucky. The 1860, 1870, and 1880 Hancock Co., Census Records say she was born in England. Other evidence leads me to believe she was born in either Durhan Co., or, Northumberland Co., England, and came to the United States with her parents in 1840-1841.

MARRIAGE - I can find no marriage record in either Perry Co., Indiana, or,
Perry Co., Indiana. Our best guess is that she married about 1850,
probably previous to taking residence sometime between 1850 and 1852.

DEATH - Tombstone Inscription at Hawesville Cemetery in Hancock Co. Kentucky.
