Biography of Elizabeth Berkley (1855-1926)

By Ken Lindsay

Elizabeth BERKLEY, daughter of Edward E. BERKLEY and Elizabeth WILSON, was born __ ___ 1855 in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky, and died 25 June 1926 in Ayrshire, Patoka Twp., Pike Co., Indiana. She was buried in Samuel Brewster's plot at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winslow, Pike Co., Indiana. Her tombstone was placed there by her two sons and reads, "Elizabeth Lindsay, mother of George and Ben."

Elizabeth BERKLEY married in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky, 7 May 1876, James B. LINDSAY, son of George S. LINDSAY and Mahalia Ann MAYS. They had three children. The first born died in infancy.

This marriage ended in divorce and I don't think Dad ever forgave his father for taking up with another woman, although they were always on speaking terms and Dad often visited his father and step-mother. When grandpa died, Dad, went to bed sick and never even attended the funeral. I was only a young child and at the time this seemed quite peculiar because Dad was so deeply religious.

Grandma died when I was a mere child and I knew very little about her. She lived in the home of Uncle George who was almost the opposite of Dad. Uncle George professed no religion, was a known bootleger; however, he led a good life, was respected in his community, and cared deeply about both parents. In fact both cared for until their deaths by he and his wife Oma.

For her children see biography of James B. LINDSAY.
