Biography of Edward E. Berkley (1823-1865)

By Ken Lindsay

Edward E. BERKLEY, son of _______ BERKLEY and _______ _______, was born 29 October 1823 in England and was killed while at work 30 April 1865 in the Victoria Coal Mine located near Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky. He is buried in the Hawesville Cemetery. His monument reads as follows:

"In bloom of life, I am called away,
God's sovereign will, I must obey.
My loving wife and children dear,
Oh, Lord, I leave them in thy care."

Our first record of him is the 1860 Census of Hawesville, Hancock Co.,
Kentucky. It shows he was a coal miner and to be born in England. His father-in-law, Thomas WILSON, had brought his family to the United States about 1840-1841. If Edward BERKLEY came at the same time, or from the same place, is unknown. He worked in the Victoria Coal Mine which was located about three miles from Patesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky.

Many of the miners had immigrated from Durham Co., England. The superintendent of the mine was Benjamin DAVISON. Edward BERKLEY
named one of his children Benjamin. I have always wondered if he was named for DAVISON and was somehow related

Edward E. BERKLEY married Elizabeth WILSON, daughter of Thomas WILSON and Elizabeth ______, __ ___ 1850, possibly in _______ Co., New Jersey.

MARRIAGE - I have found no marriage record in Hancock Co., Kentucky; therefore, it is assumed they married about 1850, possibly in New Jersey, before the WILSON family took residence in Hancock County.

They had six children (all born in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky):

  1. Thomas BERKLEY, b. __ ___ 1853; d. __ ___ ____ in _______ Co., ________.
  2. Elizabeth BERKLEY, b. __ ___ 1855; d. 25 Jun 1926 in Ayrshire, Patoka Twp., Pike Co., Indiana; m. 7 May 1876, James B. LINDSAY, in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky.
  3. Alice BERKLEY, b. 25 Dec 1857; d. 20 Oct 1917 in Utility, Hancock Co., Kentucky; m. __ ___ 1875, in Hancock Co., Kentucky, David BUTLER.
  4. Benjamin BERKLEY, b. 1 Jan 1860; killed 22 Feb 1887 in Victoria Coal Mine, Hancock Co., Kentucky. He was buried beside his father in the Hawesville Cemetery.
  5. Margaret BERKLEY, b. __ Feb 1861; d. __ ___ 1942 in Hancock Co., Kentucky; m. __ ___ 1884, Daniel GILLIAMS, in Hancock Co., Kentucky.
  6. George BERKLEY, b. __ Feb 1861; d. __ ___ ____ in Eldorado, Saline Co., Illinois; m. __ ___ 1890, Bessie GILLIAMS, in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Kentucky.

SOURCES: Information was gained from personal knowledge, interviews with Ben Wilson Lindsay, census records, tombstone inscriptions, and personal interviews with two Wilson cousins, one Butler cousin of the above children.
